INTERVIEW WITH ALISHA WAINWRIGHT

‘Shadowhunters’ actress Alisha Wainwright talks about why you should take little risk when traveling

Scroll through actress Alisha Wainwright’s Instagram feed and you’ll notice pretty quickly that she really enjoys traveling. When not filming on the set of Shadowhunters or alongside Michael B. Jordan in the new Netflix show Raising Dion, the former Smithsonian biologist can be found diving in Bali, trekking to Machu Picchu or hiking in New Zealand, and it usually does it by itself. We caught up with Wainwright, who currently lives in Los Angeles, to find out why she loves traveling alone, how she travels to decompress from work, and why she believes deleting your social media is so important.

What’s your biggest priority when you go ashore in a new place?

I am always looking for a genuinely authentic meal that is representative of where I am. I went to Trinidad in March for the Trinidad and Tobago carnival, and the first thing I wanted as soon as we landed was double this vegetarian chickpea dish that’s almost like a wrap. You buy it for pennies and roll it up and put it in your mouth. It is the quintessence of Trinidad and Tobago. I also learned very early on that I like to find a personal connection. Sure, I want to see the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but I’d also like someone to take me to the amazing bakery they go to every day so I can try their favorite croissant and find out what it’s like to live there.

Is traveling a way to disconnect from work?

Absolutely. When I was younger, traveling seemed like a drug to me. I always needed to go and see a new part of the world because I didn’t travel that much growing up. But my time seems more precious now because I work, so when I travel I want it to be proactive. I want to feel like I am traveling with intention. I recently took a week off and went on a scuba diving trip to Bali by myself – I was very overwhelmed with my work schedule at the time and wanted to relax a bit. Sometimes you need such a trip.

What is your earliest travel memory?

My mother is Jamaican and my father is Haitian, so growing up I spent many of my early years going back and forth between the two countries. Remember Jamaica is full of fresh fruit and family, greenery and positivity. Jamaican cultures always err on the side of having that ‘laid back’ vibe. My first significant memories of a trip to Haiti go back to when I was a little older, like five or six years old. That was the first time I saw what impoverishment looked like and how different someone’s life could be from mine, someone who is right outside my front door.

The most important journey you’ve ever made?

The first trip I ever made on my own was to the Cayman Islands for two weeks. I have always been very open to the idea of traveling alone and the experience of being a young woman exploring has taught me that I have a good head on my shoulders and that the world is not as scary as my mother may have thought. That trip gave me the confidence to travel and live in Central America for a year. If you are afraid, you are not taking significant risks. I don’t mean that you should do risky things, but you have to take risks. I feel incredibly comfortable traveling alone because I know what works for me and what doesn’t, and when I need to ask for help, which is often difficult for me to do.

Do you prefer to travel alone to group travel?

I travel a lot on my own because it’s so hard to find someone else who has a schedule that matches mine. But I’d say my favorite type of travel is a mix of the two: if I’m traveling alone, I still like to be part of a group experience, whether it’s living aboard a boat so I can dive or sign up. on a group excursion to Machu Picchu. This way you can meet new people who are probably traveling from all over the world and explore the culture and a place together, but you are not so attached to those people that you are forced to spend all your time with them.

Are there any female travelers who inspire you right now?

I just started following Asiyami Gold. When I first saw her story, I was obsessed with it. He’s traveling to all these places I want to go, and most of all, he looks like me. Social media travelers always have a typical look: they’re white, they’re young, they’re skinny, and they seem to be living these simply extravagant and luxurious lives. It’s hard to find an account of someone who looks like me and is doing the things I want to do. I think deleting social media is extremely important, so I try to remove some of the accounts that are making me feel bad. You need to create a social media sphere that makes you feel good and makes you feel healthy. And for me, it’s about looking for other like-minded women.

TODAY NETFLIX RELEASES ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED SERIES ADAPTED FROM A COMIC: RAISING DION.

It’s been four years since a short film went viral, driving everyone crazy for a young black boy with magical powers and his single mother doing everything in her power to protect him.

Raising Dion, based on the comic of the same name by writer Dennis Liu and illustrator Jason Piperberg, is a new Netflix series adapted by TV showrunner Carol Barbee. This mythological and magical tale with a black baby in the center is refreshing and necessary. Actor Alisha Wainwright is no stranger to the world of science fiction, having spent her time playing Maia Roberts, a werewolf on the Freeform Shadowhunter show. This time she takes a maternal role as Dion’s mother Nicole, a single parent who does everything in her power to keep her son safe.

BGN had the opportunity to speak with Wainwright about the role of Nicole, the work with Michael B. Jordan and the kind of impact this series will have on its viewers.

Tell us about Dion’s mother, Nicole. Who is she and will we learn about her in this series?
She is a former professional dancer who falls in love and has a child. Life goes on beautifully until her husband dies. Not only that, but he’s struggling to make ends meet. Her son has a hard time making friends at school and finding his place in the world. So when you see Nicole, she’s in a bit of a crisis in life. It is defeated, deflated. On top of all this, his son has superpowers. It is not something to be celebrated right away; it’s something she’s afraid of and what it’s like for him even just doing basic things like going out in public. So she is scared. The whole series is she learning to relax and letting go and trusting that she will have good intentions and will be the best of herself. I think it’s a metaphor for motherhood in general.

When you were offered the role, did you read the comic? And how did you prepare for this role?
I was lucky enough to read the pilot scripts. And then I read for the role and knew right away that it would work. The response from producers and showrunner Carol Barbee made me feel really confident that what I had envisioned for Nicole was in line with what they had envisioned for her character. Just prior to that conversation, which I had with the showrunner, I was talking to a friend about this role I thought I was getting. It was like, ‘Oh yeah, I saw that trailer. It was great and it went viral. ‘And I thought,’ What are you talking about? ‘ I had no idea because I live under a rock. I came home and my eyes were just hungry to learn more about this character. The concept that Dennis Liu created is very similar to the pilot, but has a different reading. So it was great to have some sort of foundation for what Carol Barbee has taken and transformed into the show. I had the unique privilege of being able to see the show first and then watch the source material.

The scenes between you and Ja’Siah Young felt so organic and real. How much time did you spend together while filming?
They raised us about a month before filming, because I had to start my dance training. We just had to get used to some of the basics of cinema. We did a lot of impromptu scenes. One of the executive producers, Seith Mann, took us to a park and we were going to improvise these little scenes. For example, he took us to an arcade. I went with Ja’Siah. What he was going to do was just give me $ 20 so it finished very quickly. But we were in Atlanta, Georgia, and each game cost 75 cents. So we stayed there for so long, so we could run out of money.

And sure enough, once that $ 20 ran out, I was trying to get Ja’Siah to leave. He wasn’t having it. A perfect example of what parenting is. Once we started shooting, I didn’t have time outside of shooting to spend with him because he’s a kid. He only has four hours of filming time for one day. And then he has hours for school, free time and all that. So you don’t see each other unless you’re shooting. But I’m glad we had that month of preparation because I really feel it created a foundation.

Did you have a favorite scene between you two that resonates the most with you?
There are so many. I can’t remember what the episode is, but one of my favorites is when my character Nicole gets a promotion at work. So order pork chops, whip up this hearty meal, and dance in the kitchen. She is so excited. And then Dion runs inside. He realizes that something good is going on because he smells the tasty food and sees his mother smile. So let’s start dancing together in the kitchen. And it’s so sweet. Because it’s so silly and funny. When you see him smiling and laughing, it’s all very genuine. He’s not a trained kid actor, so when you see him, you see Ja’Siah.

Michael B. Jordan plays your husband in this series, but he’s also a producer. Did he offer any feedback for you as an actor while working together?
No. I think he was, you know, respectful of what I was bringing to the table. We just cooperated without any problems. I wanted to keep things as organic as possible, and so did he. Fortunately, we have great chemistry on set. So it was really easy to get into those characters.

As Hollywood continues to lead the reboot train, Raising Dion offers a refreshing new story for audiences. Why is this particular story important to tell?
Number one, you have a black kid at the center of the story. I know that black kid out there is hungry for content that shows a reflection of themselves. I know I was when I was growing up. I’m so proud to add another story to the zeitgeist that people in my community can enjoy and use as a role model. You are also seeing a lot of superhero stories from the perspective of the person with powers. It is really fun and refreshing to see the story from the perspective of the person who has to take care of that person. It is challenging. It is not easy, just like in real life, and now you have to manage a child who can move things with his mind when he feels like it. It is really scary. I love that Raising Dion is rooted in the reality of the consequences of that.
